The world outside of her cage was truly an overwhelming place. The bright colors of the sky and intense light made her eyes ache. The rich flavors of the soups she was fed made her stomach twist. The smells and sounds of the city and the people overwhelmed her senses.
And she loved it.
It felt too good to be true, if Lapine was being completely honest. Sleeping in a bed- an actual BED!- felt like a dream. It was something she could have never even imagined just mere weeks ago. Going from a slave trapped in the caverns of an underground arena to this. To... to free. Even now just thinking about it brought tears to her eyes, sniffling a bit as she held the blanket more firmly within her grasp.
Honeyed eyes glanced up at the man walking in front of her, Cassius. Her savior, teacher, and oh so much more. The girl could remember the feeling of his arms around her as he lifted her from the broken cage, his gentle voice as he soothed her hysterics. Cassius was a kind man, Lapine had come to realize over the weeks. Quiet, but not silent. Stoic, but not cruel. He never yelled when she did something wrong. Never hit her when she accidentally caught his gaze. Always answered her questions, was patient enough to let her stumble through her words, and didn't mind it when she screamed in the night because he sometimes did it too.
Yes, he was a very kind man. Huffing a bit as she awkwardly picked up her speed a bit to catch up with him, she steeled her courage and snuck a glance at his face, the large basket in his arms. "Um..." She mumbled, eyes quickly locking with the ground before he caught her looking at him. "What- uh... where are we g-going ag-gain?" Lapine stuttered, ears pinning back with embarrassment as she buried the bottom half of her face within the large blanket in her arms.
They had left the city gates a decent while ago, walking down a well-worn path that was slowly steeping more and more upward as they continued. Eyes never staying on one place for very long, trying to see everything and anything around her, the Bunnie's ears perked up and rotated towards any sound that caught her attention. A bird chirping, squirrels fighting over an acorn, cicadas crying from their perches, the trickling of water somewhere in the distance.
It was a new place, that was for certain. She stole one more curious peak at Cassius, nose twitching as she waited for a response. Cassius glanced down at Lapine who tried to catch up to his pace. Naturally he slowed a little, allowing her to be able to consistently walk next to him. In his arms was woven basket filled with food for the two of them to share, while she carried the blanket for them to sit on.

Where were they going? He would tell her its a surprise. The moment would be important to her for the rest of her life, and he didn't want to spoil that for her. "Just wait and see," he answered, his eyes focused ahead as they made their way further from the city and onto a hill.

This site was perfect. Not a cloud in the sky, no tree's to block the view, and the ambiance was soft. Nearby was a slow moving stream at the base of the hill, and the grass wasn't too long. "Alright, spread out the blanket Lapine," he asked, eyes looking towards the sunset to gauge just how long they had.

Brilliant reds and purples and oranges pooling in honey brown. She was told that clouds were made of water, but couldn't help but have that childish thought of 'no, they're made of cottonballs' as the bright pinks dotted the horizon. The sun was dipping lower, the colors going darker, but the Bunnie couldn't find it within herself to care all that much.
Though... it was getting rather late. Lapine thought it was definitely strange that Cassius was letting her be out this late at all, considering that he said she was "still recovering". The girl had a difficult time believing that since she had felt better within these past few weeks than she had throughout the years of being trapped in that cage, but she simply obeyed whenever she was told without complaint.
Cassius's answer- or rather his lack of one- made Lapine's curiosity pique. Just wait and see, he said. She knew that it was supposed to be a surprise, and at first she thought it had something to do with how they were going on a... a picnic? That's what Cassius had called it, at least. But since he had told her at least that much, then obviously the picnic wasn't the surprise. So then what was it?
Mind wandering with whatever could possibly be the surprise Cassius was planning, Lapine almost found herself colliding with the man when he stopped. Catching herself in time, the girl sniffed the air as she skittered around him, ears perked up as she inspected the area.
It was beautiful, that was for certain. They stood atop a hill, the breeze gently teasing her thick fur, the warmth of the wind melting her stress away. The smells of flowers that was thick in the air, the light bubbling of a stream at the base. They had an unimpaired view of the sky, with the darkening gorgeous colors, and Lapine couldn't help but be pleased at the chosen spot.
"It's pretty..." she murmured, quiet voice warm and soft as her toes dug into the silken grass beneath. Ears tilted towards Cassius as he spoke, glancing down to the bundle in her arms before she looked across the hilltop for a prime location. Going around certain areas and patting the ground with her feat to ensure maximum firm flatness, Lapine happily- if extremely clumsily- spread the blanket the best she could.

A large hand brushed the back of his head while the other held onto the basket with care. It was just a coincidence that he happened upon this specific hill, only have an inkling that the area would have an area without any trees. "Someone told me this would be a nice area to look in," he answered, technically not lying to her, and not feeling bad about being a half truth.

Cassius set the basket down on the blanket, standing over it and Lapine, watching her smooth out the edges of the cloth they would sit on. "You can unpack the basket if you want," he said, knowing that she might enjoy having the job allowing him to see what snacks they had packed for the trip, "After we eat, you should be ready to see your surprise," he noted, taking into consideration how long it would take them to eat the sandwiches in comparison to the setting sun.

Lowering himself onto the blanket, Cass stretched his long legs out, his feet not quite making it on the burlap surface. He leaned back on his hands before turning to the small rabbit, "How are you feeling?" he asked, in his normal dull tone of voice.

Typically speaking, blindly taking someone for their word was a rather dangerous thing to do. But Lapine was certain that Cassius was a good person, her favorite, if she was being honest. She was certain that he wouldn't take advantage of that. After all, he didn't feel like the monsters who had kept her in the cages. He had freed her, and that meant the world to the girl.
Knelling in front of the basket, there was a small hum that bubbled from Lapine's chest. A strangely nostalgic tune, bringing a wistful smile to her face, as she took the food out.
"On me dit que nos vies ne valent pas grand chose," She started to sing the words she didn't quite understand, but somehow knew from the bottom of her heart. "Elles passent en un instant comme fanent les roses." It was a slow song, her quiet singing drifting through the clearing as she carefully set the picnic. Her absentminded humming continuing, lyrics of a foreign tongue murmured under her breath as the plates were placed. The sandwiches served. The drinks poured.
Sitting next to Cassius, close enough to lean against him if she so wished, Lapine brought her little cup of orange juice to her lips. "I'm..." She paused for a second, thinking as she sipped her juice. After all, there was so much that she could say. So much she wanted- no, needed to say, but just couldn't formulate the words. How was she feeling. That was a complicated question.
"I'm good." She settled with, her voice peaceful as her thumbs rubbed circles on the small plastic cup in her grasp. How could she not be? She was in paradise now, compared to the hell of the caverns. The cages. A smile pulled at her lips as she stared into her drink, eyes half lidded as the familiar-yet-foreign song played in her head. Glancing at Cassius, her eyes warmed and softened before turning back to her juice. Her smile grew, Lapine nibbling her lip to stop herself from outright grinning.
"Th... Thank you for t-taking me here." Sitting here with Cassius, the soft blanket under her stretched legs, the cool juice in her hands and the tasty sandwich at her side, the singing of birds and the bubbling of a stream, Lapine couldn't help but feel at ease.

He stayed in that position for a while, not bringing himself to even eat the food they packed. Her answer was all that mattered to him in that moment, relief flooding over him as she reassured his beliefs. He tried to remember his first few weeks of being free. He was scared, felt alone, and lost in the world despite having someone around to show him the ropes. It was a feeling that he never wanted her to experience. "The surprise isn't over yet," he said in response to her showing of gratitude.

The last rays of light finally set beyond the mountains, and like the lights on a stage, the world dimmed. Straightening his posture, Cass raised his hands, one sitting atop Lapine's soft head and stroking her fur softly. The other pointed up at the sky, where she would be able to see the sparkling sky in between the clouds. "Watch up there," he explained. The starry sky would be a sight forever ingrained in her mind, as it was his own a long time ago.

Slowly, Cassius laid back, his hands underneath his head as his blue eyes traced the horizontal plane above them. Why would the gods ever want to leave such a beautiful celestial home? It was bewildering to him, and he wondered what the world would be like without their divine intervention.

The world would go quiet, as if it was falling asleep under the night sky. The air got a bit colder, but in a refreshing way. Bird songs were replaced with cricket tune's and in the grass around them, little lights would flicker like they were a reflection of the sky.

She still had flashbacks, vivid hallucinations that overcame her every sense of the trainers and their sadistic grins when, whenever anyone laid a hand on her. Where she couldn't help but freeze at the barest instance of someone bumping into her on the street, patting her back when she choked on a piece of food, even just people staring at her fur. It always felt like her blood froze into slush, her heartbeat roaring in her ears like a war drum echoing songs of disasters to come.
So when Cassius put his large, calloused hand atop Lapine's head and she simply relaxed into his touch, it really spoke volumes about how much she trusted him. Because there was a battle raging on in Lapine's mind, her fear of being touched verses her horrifically touch-starved desire for physical affection. And with most people, the nauseating anxiety won out. But with Cassius?
She couldn't help but let out a small sigh, completely content and at ease as his fingers ever so gently ran through her fur. The ever-present tension within her body escaping with the breath as she closed her eyes and leaned against his side. And when he nudged her, when he spoke, when she opened her eyes and looked up-
Honeyed eyes were awash with the glittering lights in the sky. Entire galaxies pooling in the soft brown depths, reflected back on the deep purples and blues so dark that the sky looked black. An endless expanse of twinkling dots, countless and truly infinite, as they were frozen in swirls and dips and clusters. The air was stolen from Lapine's lungs as she gazed upon the brilliance of the night sky, nose burning and tears pooling as she was hit with the sheer beauty of it all.
She felt nearly overwhelmed by the sight, swallowing helplessly as she felt like she would simply float away into the vast expanse above. But the hand on her head grounded her, reminding her that she wasn't alone, and she held onto that like a lifeline.
"What are they?" She murmured, her voice the barest of whispers as if any words from her lips would shatter the moment. Lapine leaned a bit more heavily into Cassius, practically in his lap, but her head never moved as it continued to strain upwards.

Cassius didn't have that knowledge. Instead he formed thoughts in his mind, --of what he convinced himself they were. The colors, the darkness that blanketed the sky, and the lights that decorated the plane. "Stars," he said in a single word to answer her question. Though giving them a name alone couldn't define their purpose.

"I have few memories of when I was little. Before I was taken", he started, trying to vividly picture the fragmented recollection in his cerebral, "This one... I was in the desert, looking up at the sky just like this, and my father told me; 'The stars are a map designed by the gods so that we could find our way when lost.'"

He inhaled and exhaled deeply,"A night like this, was my first sight after I was free...", he explained to Lapine. The vision of that fateful evening was seared into his mind like a branding. He emerged from the underground mine, to see a plethora of color's and faded twinkling dots. He fell to his knees, weeping and cursing everyone and everything for taking all that he loved. The night sky would always serve as a reminder of his imprisonment, his freedom, and the time that he was happy.
